Why Clean Your Dryer Vents?

Very few people realize it is necessary to clean their dryer vent. However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2007 there were an estimated 15,500 fires, 230 injuries and 16 deaths associated with dryer vents. Additionally, several hundred people each year are subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $101 million per year. In some cases, faulty appliances are to blame but many of these fires can be prevented with proper dryer ventsetup andcleaning.

Energy Savings:  According to Florida Power & Light (FP&L), properly cleaned dryers and dryer vents can save up to 37% on your electrical power consumption and 23% on natural gas consumption. For a family of three, doing an average of 7 loads per week with electricity @ 13 cents per KWH/hr, your savings would be $108 yearly.

Why Dryer Fires Occur:

Lint accumulation and reduced airflow feed on each other to provide conditions ripe for a fire. Lint is a highly combustible material which, interestingly enough, is one of the ingredients in a recipe for home-made fire starters.  A number of dryer vent problems contribute to lint accumulation.

A Growing Problem:  Traditionally, most clothes dryers are located in the basement. Many newer homes tend to have dryers positioned further away from an outside wall, for instance, in a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or hall closet. These new locations mean dryers are vented longer distances and vents are generally installed with sharp turns and bends to accommodate the structure of the home. As a result, the lint build-up inside dryer vents becomes harder to reach, creating more places for lint to gather.

Inside the Dryer:  Lint is the biggest culprit here. As you know, dryers produce very large quantities of lint. Most people assume their lint traps catch all of the lint and they only need to clean them after each load. However, a significant amount of this lint is not caught by the lint trap and builds up inside the dryer – including directly on the heating element! Try this experiment: Remove the lint trap and look into the cavity. You may find large mounds of lint remaining. This lint can build up on the heating element and in other places inside the dryer, causing it to overheat and possibly catch fire. As a rule, a fire starts from a spark. Improper dryer vent practices can play a key role in this hazard.

Outside the Dryer:  There are many preventable improper dryer vent practices that restrict airflow and lead to lint build-up.
imgSome of the most common examples are:

- Dryer vent is too long
- Duct leading to the exterior has too many bends
- Inadequate clearance between dryer and wall which can crush
   the vent material
- Failure to clean the dryer duct
- Use of flammable or flimsy plastic or foil duct extenders. Only metal vents should be used (which is now required in most states) as they resist crushing better than plastic or foil.

American In-home Maintenance’s
Dryer Vent Cleaning 5-Point Process:

  1. Empty and clean vent
  2. Clean underside of dryer
  3. Remove flammable material from vent and wall duct
  4. Check distance from dryer to wall, realign if necessary
  5. Check vent for kinks

You’re dryer needs maintenance if:
- Clothes are taking longer to dry
- Clothes come out hotter than usual
- Vent hood flapper does not open

Before you leave your house:

- Never let your clothes dryer run while you are away from the house (even worse, while you are asleep).

- Thoroughly read manufacturer’s instructions for safe use of your dryer.

- If you cannot follow the above items, you can always use an old-fashioned clothesline. It’s safer!

Why Clean Your Refrigerator or Freezer?

Maintaining and cleaning your refrigerator and freezer will decrease your energy costs by up to 13%*, extend the life of these appliances and help them operate more environmentally friendly.
imgYour freezer is as important to maintain as your refrigerator because it is designed to produce much colder temperatures.  Therefore, a freezer consumes more electricity and requires proper maintenance to achieve its best possible energy efficiency and insure proper food safety.

Granite, Marble, Hard Surface and Grout Cleaning

Have you ever noticed that restaurants throughout the United States use stainless steel in their food preparation areas?  U.S.restaurants are not permitted to install granite or marble surfaces for food preparation because they are porous.  Porosity allows bacteria and other harmful germs and pathogens to grow, reaching the surface area of the counter top.

American In-home Maintenance offers total granite, marble and hard surface cleaning of manmade and natural materials that not only remove dirt and harmful substances but also seals and polishes your counter tops, vanities and table top surfaces. Let AIM make all your hard surfaces more hygienic with Neutraclean
© , specifically developed for granite, marble, Corian and ceramic and porcelain tile. Due to its neutral composition, this exclusive formula is environmentally friendly and will not harm a natural stone’s finish or cause loss of gloss or sheen.

After cleaning the surfaces, we apply our sealer and polish to enhance and protect the natural beauty of the granite and marble. This is not a coating, nor does it contain any polymers to distort the color, clarity, or reflective capacity of natural stone.
